Divergent Character Beatrice Prior

Beatrice Prior is the protagonist of the book. Beatrice starts the book living as a member of the abnegation faction. She is stuck in a world of selflessness. Where looking in a mirror is nearly unheard of. "I sneak a look at my reflection when she isn't paying attention- not for the sake of vanity, but out of curiosity" (Roth 1). Beatrice was a curious girl who wanted to explore a different life. Her character begins to change when she chooses to betray her family. "...my blood sizzles on the coals. I am selfish. I am brave"(Roth 47). As the book continues, Beatrice begins to socialize with and meet new characters. She slowly transforms from a girl who was raised to be caring to a woman possessing little to no care for others. "His feet are just inches from my head. I should comfort him- I should want to comfort him, because I was raised that way. Instead I feel disgust"(Roth 74). She starts to show her selfish side. The side she has had to hide her whole life. As a character she becomes more defiant to rules and more ruthless. " She Groans, and I hear a gurgling in her throat, watch blood trickle from her lips...I wish I could say I felt guilty for what I did. I don't" (Roth 174). She gains friends ( Christina, Will) and enemies (Molly, Drew, Peter.) She also gains a lover. A man named Tobias. Nicknamed four because he only has four fears. Tobias and Beatrice interact with eachother and make eachother better as characters and people. Without Beatrice being a Divergent character the plot would no longer exist. There would be no mystery in the story and very little conflict. Beatrice propels the plot because of her unusual personality and the way that she interacts with characters and society. Even though Beatrice wasn't supposed to look in a mirror she looks different than her reflection. She is a small girl that belongs in abnegation but inside she is a fierce woman who wants to take risks and explore the world opposite of her own.

Dauntless: The Brave

"We believe that cowardice is to blame for the world’s injustices.

We believe that peace is hard-won, that sometimes it is necessary to fight for peace. But more than that: We believe that justice is more important than peace.

We believe in freedom from fear, in denying fear the power to influence our decisions. We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another.

We believe in acknowledging fear and the extent to which it rules us. We believe in facing that fear no matter what the cost to our comfort, our happiness, or even our sanity.

We believe in shouting for those who can only whisper, in defending those who cannot defend themselves.

We believe, not just in bold words but in bold deeds to match them. We believe that pain and death are better than cowardice and inaction because we believe in action.

We do not believe in living comfortable lives. We do not believe that silence is useful.

We do not believe in good manners.

We do not believe in empty heads, empty mouths, or empty hands.

We do not believe that learning to master violence encourages unnecessary violence.

We do not believe that we should be allowed to stand idly by. We do not believe that any other virtue is more important than bravery" (Roth 47-48).

Abnegation: The Selfless

Each week I am going to post about an individual faction of the book Divergent. This week I am going to start with the main character Beatrice's faction abnegation. The definition of abnegation is to refuse or deny oneself or to relinquish; give up. If you are in the abnegation faction, you don't like to draw attention to yourself and like to put others before yourself. Others see you as difficult to get to know but quiet and nice.  Your manifestos is : "I will be my undoing If I become my obsession. I will forget the ones I love if I don't deserve them. I will war with others if I refuse to see them. Therefore I turn away from my reflection to rely not on myself but on my brothers and sisters, to protect always outward until I disappear" (Roth 35).

Divergent theme and summary

The theme of Divergent so far is being yourself will help you to become successful. Throughout the book the main character Beatrice continues to get more and more successful. This was a result of deciding to betray her faction and for once be herself. In abnegation, the faction Beatrice was born into has a rule that you must be selfless, if Beatrice stuck with the rules, and didn't act as her own person she would still be with her family. The theme arises and becomes more clear when it states "Then, with a gasp I can't contain,I shift my hand forward, and my blood sizzles on the coals. I am selfish. I am brave" (Roth 47). This was the first point in the story when she went against abnegation and became her own person. After this her success began to show. "Fierce pleasure courses through me and I smile. It's a small accomplishment..." (Roth 136). At this point of the story Beatrice's survives her first accomplishment in her new faction. "You won..." (Roth 174). Beatrice won a fist fight after being portrayed as the weakest in the group and she proved herself to her new faction. She proved more initiates of her faction wrong in chapter sixteen when it states "look at you. Number six....We should celebrate" (Roth 200).  Beatrice went from the bottom of her faction to 6th overall. As Beatrice and the plot of the story grow the theme shines through more and more. Being yourself will help you to become more successful.

Beatrice

Beatrice is the main character in my book and she is amazing. She doesn't care what anyone thinks about her. She is bold and willing to defy the rules of her faction. The thing that bothers me is that she is so willing to turn her back on her family. The ones she has lived with her entire life. She might betray the ones she loves and if I did that I don't think I could handle the guilt.

Divergent Book Recomendation

Even though I have not finished the book Divergent, I strongly recomend it. Personally I do not enjoy reading, however, I have not been able to put this book down. So far divergent is set in the future and it had similar settings to The Hunger Games. In the book  there is a girl named Beatrice. She is the main character and she has to overcome many obstacles and difficult decisions. She first has to take a test to see what faction or group she would fit best into. When she takes her test she discovers something strange. She now has to decide between herself by going against her current faction, or staying with her family. I think this book has incredible detail and I can visualize myself in the main characters shoes. As a person who doesn't read often this is already one of the best written and most descriptive books I have read.

Factions of Divergent Reading Skills

In The new book I am reading called Divergent there are different factions you can be assigned to. The factions are basically classes or groups where you have to follow certain rules. You get assigned a faction after taking a test. There are several possible factions such as Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite. All of the factions portray different traits such as bravery and intelligence. The main character Beatrice goes through the experience of the test and finds out something unheard of ;something she can't tell anyone, not even her family. To find out what faction you would be a part of you can take the faction quiz. After I took the quiz, I discovered that I was just like Beatrice. However I was also very similar to the Erudite faction which means that I was defined as 'intelligent'. Find out your faction and comment your results!

Divergent

I have just started reading the book Divergent by Veronica Roth. I don't particularly enjoy reading, however so far this book is very intriguing. I am currently on chapter five and I already want to know what will happen next. The main character Beatrice Prior has taken a test to see what faction she will be places into. A faction is like a clique or class in which you can't disobey certain rules. When Beatrice gets out of the ordinary results she is left to decide between herself and her family. Although Beatrice's current faction is focused on selflessness, I predict that she will abandon her family for her own good. One of the rarest factions has become an option for Beatrice after taking the test. This faction is called the Divergent faction. As a reader i am strongly wondering what this faction entails. I think the book in general is a lot like the world today. Although we aren't exactly like the characters our world and society are very similar. In Divergent there are are factions, and compared to our society factions are like clicks in high school. For example there is a faction named dauntless which would compare to the 'goths' of high school. So far,"divergent seems a lot like "The Hunger Games" because there is a main character of a different futuristic time period that has to make difficult decisions and runs into a lot of conflict along the way. If I was in Beatrice's position and had to choose whether or not to leave my family I don't think i could. I would tear myself apart because I wouldn't want to leave my family but, I also wouldn't want to follow the strict rules of Beatrice's current faction. What would you do?
