Divergent Character Beatrice Prior

Beatrice Prior is the protagonist of the book. Beatrice starts the book living as a member of the abnegation faction. She is stuck in a world of selflessness. Where looking in a mirror is nearly unheard of. "I sneak a look at my reflection when she isn't paying attention- not for the sake of vanity, but out of curiosity" (Roth 1). Beatrice was a curious girl who wanted to explore a different life. Her character begins to change when she chooses to betray her family. "...my blood sizzles on the coals. I am selfish. I am brave"(Roth 47). As the book continues, Beatrice begins to socialize with and meet new characters. She slowly transforms from a girl who was raised to be caring to a woman possessing little to no care for others. "His feet are just inches from my head. I should comfort him- I should want to comfort him, because I was raised that way. Instead I feel disgust"(Roth 74). She starts to show her selfish side. The side she has had to hide her whole life. As a character she becomes more defiant to rules and more ruthless. " She Groans, and I hear a gurgling in her throat, watch blood trickle from her lips...I wish I could say I felt guilty for what I did. I don't" (Roth 174). She gains friends ( Christina, Will) and enemies (Molly, Drew, Peter.) She also gains a lover. A man named Tobias. Nicknamed four because he only has four fears. Tobias and Beatrice interact with eachother and make eachother better as characters and people. Without Beatrice being a Divergent character the plot would no longer exist. There would be no mystery in the story and very little conflict. Beatrice propels the plot because of her unusual personality and the way that she interacts with characters and society. Even though Beatrice wasn't supposed to look in a mirror she looks different than her reflection. She is a small girl that belongs in abnegation but inside she is a fierce woman who wants to take risks and explore the world opposite of her own.
