Divergent mood and tone

The tone of divergent is heroic and mysterious. "It was always my intention to save you. My throat feels tight. But I betrayed you. I left you" (Roth 441). " I feel like someone breathed new air into my lungs. I am not Abnegtion. I am not Dauntless. I am Divergent. And I can't be controlled" (Roth 442). " somehow I get up and start running. I am brave" (Roth 444). " realize what?... That every second I waste means another Abnegation dead and another Dauntless made into a murderer? I've realized that. Now it's your turn" (Roth 466). Throughout these quotes and the book itself the heroic tone becomes more and more clear to readers. Beatrice always wore grey had a pretty boring life. Now she is a hero weather or not anyone knows she is a hero is beside the point. She risks her life to save others and the books tone supports her heroic actions. There are many moods involved in the book such as numb, relieved, enraged, and depressed. However, I think the best mood to describe the novel is : on edge. Because the book has so many outrageous and exciting parts that will change your mood as a reader. You can go from smiling to crying within a single chapter. "She falls, first to her knees, her hands limp at her sides...she is motionless and without breath" (Roth 443). -sadness"I am almost sure that I see a smile in my fathers eyes" (Roth 457).  Happiness, relief. "Then I love you" (Roth 486). -happy, relieved or maybe even sick or jealous depending on the reader.  At one point of the story Beatrice was trying to convince her dad, her brother and another character named Marcus to jump of a roof into dauntless headquarters so they could save a lot of people. Beatrice's serious tone made her more persuasive because it told the other characters how important that moment was.
